ATLANTA (May 9, 2024) – Spelman College is pleased to announce that senior Alexis Campbell, C’2024, has been awarded an English Teaching Assistant Award by the Fulbright Scholar Program. Starting in August, Campbell will travel to New Taipei City in Taiwan for 11 months to teach English as part of Fulbright’s English Assistant Program.
The Fulbright Program is the United States government’s flagship international educational and cultural exchange program. Students and scholars from over 160 countries have the opportunity to study, teach, conduct research and exchange ideas globally. Campbell, a history major and writing minor from Fayetteville, GA, is the 56th Spelman student to be selected as a Fulbright Scholar.
"Alexis submitted a stunningly beautiful application. She reflected thoughtfully on her Spelman experience and translated all that she had learned here into a marvelous plan for all that she could accomplish in Taiwan,” said Michelle Hite, Ph.D., associate professor of English and international fellowships and scholarships co-director at Spelman. “We are an aspirational institution for many young Black women who set big dreams for themselves. As a Fulbright recipient, Alexis offers an example of how we prepare our students to deliver on their promises. I'm convinced that what Alexis has accomplished is available to all of our students who want it."
The Fulbright Program awards over 1,700 fellowships a year, allowing 800 U.S. Scholars to travel abroad. As a Fulbright Scholar, Campbell will make meaningful contributions to communities abroad and at home, as well as in her chosen field. Fulbright Scholars are chosen for their ability to inspire, innovate, and contribute to finding solutions to challenges facing our communities and the world.
“Winning a Fulbright grant means so much to me as I consider myself a world traveler with many questions about the world. With no prior experience in Asia, I hope to come back with a deeper understanding of what it means to be a global citizen and an established fluency in Mandarin,” said Campbell. “Upon my return, I hope to leverage my Fulbright experience to contribute meaningfully to the U.S. education system as an educational equity and justice advocate.”
